Commander Rick Husband was a native of Amarillo Texas. He became an astronaut in 1995 and first flew on the STS-96 mission.
STS-96 in May 1999 was the second shuttle flight to the International Space Station (ISS). At that point the space station just consisted of two parts - the Russian-built "FGB" (Functional Cargo Block) module, and the American "Node". The original purpose for STS-96 was to outfit the Russian Service Module but it had several delays. NASA and Russia decided to go ahead with STS-96 anyway to perform repairs on the space station and load it with supplies which would be needed by the live-aboard crews in the future. After STS-96 Husband became the astronaut responsible for safety and was the weather coordinator for several launches. In October 2000 managers assigned Rick Husband to command the STS-107 mission.
